The Cost of Residential Shipments
When making residential shipments, make sure you let your freight agent know you are shipping to or from a residence.  If it is a business within a home or apartment, this is considered a residence. Schools, farms and churches are all also considered residences because of the type of truck used to access these locations.

The cost for residential shipments is usually significantly higher, however we get a discount as long as it is notated before the shipment gets picked up. These fees can sometimes be in the upwards of $100 extra dollars compared to business shipments. Residential fees tend to vary between carriers though. Often times, a lift gate is always added for residential shipments weighing over 100lbs.

Any shipment weighing over 100lbs, the driver will not be able to pick up without the use of machinery. If the residence does not have a way to load the freight, such as a forklift or manpower, a lift gate will be required to assist the driver. Lift gates are used to load or unload freight when a loading dock or forklift are not available. Trucks that come with a lift gate have pallet jacks to help the driver maneuver the customer’s heavy freight. Lift gate fees can be as low as $25.00 depending upon availability and the carrier. If you require your shipment to be picked up from or delivered to a location that is not directly adjacent to the truck, an inside pick up or delivery fee may apply. Inside pick up or inside delivery fees vary depending upon your freight item.
